Is Vibe Coding Killing Real Developer Skills or Making Us More Productive?

Hey, I'm Funmibi — a self-taught frontend developer from Lagos, Nigeria. I build responsive, fast, and clean websites that help small businesses and startups show up professionally online. I write practical web dev tutorials on my blog to help other developers grow. If you need a website or want to collaborate, reach out at funmibitech@gmail.com

A new term took over the developer community in 2026 — vibe coding.

You describe what you want. AI builds it. No syntax. No debugging. Just vibes.

Some developers love it. Others are terrified. Here's the real answer.

What is Vibe Coding

The term was coined by Andrej Karpathy — former AI lead at Tesla and OpenAI. The idea is simple. Instead of writing code line by line you describe what you want in plain English and let AI generate it for you.

Tools driving it right now — Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT and v0. You describe a component, a feature or an entire app and the AI writes the code. You review, tweak and ship.

The promise is clear — ship faster, build more and spend less time fighting syntax.

The Case For Vibe Coding

It removes repetitive boilerplate that adds no thinking value. Setting up a project structure, writing CRUD operations, creating standard UI components — AI handles these in seconds so you can focus on the parts that actually require your brain.

It dramatically speeds up prototyping. What used to take a day can take an hour. For freelancers and indie developers that speed advantage is real money.

It levels the playing field for self taught developers. You don't need five years of experience to build something impressive anymore. A developer who understands fundamentals and uses AI well can compete with developers who have been coding for years.

And used correctly AI is genuinely like having a senior developer available at any time. One that doesn't get tired, doesn't judge your questions and explains everything you ask.

The Case Against

Here's where it gets honest.

Developers are accepting code they don't understand. Copy, paste, ship. It works until it doesn't. And when it breaks — when the AI generated code has a bug, a security vulnerability or an edge case nobody accounted for — a developer who never learned fundamentals has no idea where to even start looking.

Debugging AI generated code without fundamentals is genuinely painful. AI is confident even when it's wrong. It will give you broken code with the same energy it gives you working code. If you can't read the code you can't catch the mistake.

Over reliance creates fragile developers. Developers who can't write a loop without asking AI, can't explain what their own code does and can't work without an internet connection are not actually developers. They are prompt writers with a shaky foundation.

And security vulnerabilities in AI generated code are a real problem. AI doesn't always follow security best practices. It generates functional code that often skips input sanitization, proper authentication checks and secure data handling. A developer who doesn't know what to look for will ship those vulnerabilities straight to production.

The Real Answer

Vibe coding is a tool. Not a replacement.

The developers winning right now are not the ones refusing to use AI. They are also not the ones using AI as a crutch to avoid learning. They are the ones who learned the fundamentals, understand what good code looks like and use AI to move faster than anyone else.

Fundamentals are what let you use AI effectively. When you understand JavaScript deeply you can look at AI generated code and instantly spot what's wrong, what's inefficient and what's missing. When you don't — you're just hoping it works.

AI amplifies skill. It does not replace it. A skilled developer with AI is ten times more productive. A developer with no fundamentals and AI is just someone waiting for their project to break in production.

Conclusion

Vibe coding isn't killing developers.

Developers who refuse to learn fundamentals and hide behind AI are doing that themselves.

Learn the basics properly. Understand what your code does. Then use every AI tool available to go faster than you ever could alone.

That's not vibe coding. That's just being a smart developer in 2026.

Are you vibe coding or building from scratch? Or both? Drop your honest take in the comments — this one should spark a real conversation.
